Avianca Airlines is a Colombian airline which joined the Star Alliance network back in 2012. The Star Alliance consists of 27 different airlines including Air Canada and United Airlines.

Avainaca Silver or Gold status, corresponds to Star Alliance Silver or Gold status. Star Alliance Gold status nets you amongst other benefits, unlimited Star Alliance lounge access, priority boarding, priority baggage handling and extra baggage allowance. For upgrades, Avianca Gold status will only net you upgrades on Avianca itself and not other Star Alliance airlines.

Ordinarily, to qualify for Avianca Silver status, you’ll need to fly 22,000 miles, while for Gold status you’ll need 40,000 miles. Additionally, at least a minimum of 5,000-10,000 miles of the 22,000 – 40,000 miles has to be flown on Avianca metal itself.

Interestingly enough, as of recently, Avianca is outright just selling Silver and Gold status even with no miles flown!

The cost to purchase Silver status is $1,200, and the cost to purchase Gold status is $2,200. Purchased status is valid for 12 months.
