Convert Your Starwood Starpoints into USAirways Miles & Earn 20% Bonus Miles

In addition to the American Airlines AAdvantage promo that we posted about earlier, there is also a similar promo for US Airways miles.

Terms are pretty much the same for this promo. For every 20,000 Starpoints you transfer, you’ll end up with 30,000 US Airways miles. Offer is good through July 30, 2014.

Capture

You can read about the USAirways award chart and benefits over here.

Unlike Starpoint transfers to AAdavantage miles, where the name must match for the transfer to go through, USAirways is (as of now) more lenient and will allow transfers even from accounts where the names do not match.

Also If you have a US Airways Premier World MasterCard, you’ll get a 5,000 mile discount on US Airways award tickets.

Convert your Starwood Starpoints into AAdvantage Miles & Earn 20% Bonus Miles

From now through July 31, 2014, when you convert 20,000 Starpoints to American Airlines AAdvantage miles you’ll earn a 20% bonus. Usually you would earn 25,000 AAdvantage miles on a 20,000 Starpoint transfer, now with this offer, you’ll earn 30,000 AAdvantage points.

Capture

One can transfer up to 79,999 of their Starpoints per transaction per program within a 24-hour period to the American Airlines AAdvantage program. Though, in order to maximize this promo, you won’t want to transfer more than 60,000 per 24 hour period, which with the current promo, will transfer to 90,0000 American Airline AAdvantage miles.

Note that the extra 20% bonus (5,000 points per 20,000) will not initially show when making the point transfer, as this bonus is provided by American Airlines.

Also note that Starwood hotel points do not transfer instantly to American Airlines and can take up to a week for the transfer to post.

You can also pick up an easy 40,000 USAirways miles, which come 2015 will convert into AAdvantage miles, with the US Airways Premier World MasterCard. With this offer, there is no crazy minimum spend that you need to do in order to get the 40k bonus. Spending just $1 will net you the 40,000 bonus. You can read more about this card here.

You can also earn 100,000 AAdvantage miles with the Citi Executive / AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard, though this requires $10,000 spend within in the first 3 months and has a $450 annual fee.

United Airlines Going Delta – Mileage Accrual Switching To Revenue Based

United Airlines is following Delta’s lead, in terms of instituting a revenue based system on mileage accrual. Up until now, you got miles based on the distance flown. As of March 2015 though, it will be based on the amount of money you paid for the ticket.

Capture

Starting March of 2015, regular base members will earn 5 miles per dollar paid. Silvers members will earn 7, Gold members will earn 8, Platinum members will earn 9, and 1K members will earn 11. There is a cap of 75k miles one can earn per ticket.
Miles will be earned on the base fare plus carrier-imposed surcharges. Miles will not be earned on the taxes portion of the ticket.

These changes will affect flights flown on United Airlines, United Express or partner tickets issued by United Airlines and which are credited to United’s frequent flyer program.

These changes will not effect tickets which are bought on Star Alliance or partner airlines (other than United) and the mileage is credited to United Airlines. Miles accrual on those tickets will continue to be distance-based.

Elite status will continue to be earned on distance flown and not price paid.

No matter how United would like to spin this, this is not a good change for most United members. The only ones who will gain from this change are business class travelers who are paying lots of $$ for tickets – Though in that case it’ll be more worthwhile to just redeem miles.

Once this change kicks in, American Airlines will be the last remaining domestic airline which still rewards miles based on distance flown.  Will American Airlines follow suit and go revenue based?

Via ReutersAmerican Airlines Group said it would first seek to combine the American and US Airways loyalty programs after its merger last year. “We are always watching the competitive environment and we’ll make sure AAdvantage is positioned as an industry-leading loyalty program,” spokesman Matt Miller said.”

One thing is for certain, in the unlikely event that AA chooses to keep their mileage program as is, they will undouebtly get many new frequent flyer members.

In terms of redemption changes – United announced that there will also be “new ways” to use your miles, including Economy Plus upgrades, Checked baggage subscriptions and “more on the way”. While these new redemption options will most likely not be at a decent redemption value (though we’ll have to wait and see as no details were given) one really has to wonder, being as the wording is extremely vague, if their ultimate goal is to go revenue based on the redemption side as well, as Delta already has – which will not be fun.

Bottom line: As of now, this is not the worst devaluation and the upcoming changes will for the most part only effect those who earn miles from flying, and not for those earning miles from credit cards. Though this is coming on the heels of United’s massive frequent flyer devaluation back in March, and one has to wonder what else United has up their sleeves…

Cashing Out The 40,000, $440 Bonus On The Barclaycard Arrival Credit Card

Update: This offer is expired.

Update 02/20/14: The Minimum spend requirement to get the 40,000 point bonus, has now gone up to $3,000 spend within the first 90 days. The 20,000 bonus point offer on the no annual fee version of the BarclayCard Arrival, still only requires $1,000 spend within 90 days
——————————————

The Barclaycard Arrival World Mastercard is one of the best cash back credit cards out there. It offers a nice 2 percent cash-back (in the form of points) on ALL purchases, Barclays-Arrivalplus an additional 10% back upon redeeming your points, so effectively you are getting a nice 2.2% back on all purchases.

Plus, it also offers 40,000 bonus points for spending $1,000 within the first 90 days. Upon redeeming those 40,000 bonus points you will get the 10% bonus which will be 4,000 points which in essence means that you are really getting 44,000 bonus points or in dollar terms, $440 free. This is being advertised as a limited time offer, the end date is unknown.

The way to redeem the points at full value though is to redeem them for “Travel Expenses”. That means any time you charge travel to your card you will have the option of paying for the travel with your points at 1 cent value per point (+ you’ll get the 10% back).

The travel can be booked via any booking site or straight from the agency etc;. Airlines, Travel Agencies & Tour Operators, Hotels, Motels & Resorts, Cruise Lines, Passenger Railways and Car Rental Agencies are all considered travel expenses. Once the charge shows up on your account you can the simply go online to your Barclays account (see below) and request that the purchase be refunded using your points.

For example if you spend $420 dollars on a plane ticket and have 42,000 points from the bonus from opening the card and spending the $1,000, you’ll be able to get a $420 cash refund. Plus, you’ll also get 4,200 points redeposited to your account worth $42.

This card also doesn’t charge any foreign transaction fees. The annual fee is waived for the first year. After the first year is up, if you do not want to pay the $89 annual fee, simply call up Barclays and downgrade to the no annual fee version of the BarclayCard Arrival World Mastercard. The main differences between the Annual fee version and the no annual fee version is that the no annual fee version only gives a 20,000 point signup bonus and you only get 2 points on travel and dining purchases. The no annual fee version also gives a 10% point refund with every redemption and has no foreign transaction fees.

Also a nice perk about Barclays, is that they generally only pull from Transunion no matter your location, as opposed to Chase, Amex or Citi. That mean’s that Chase, Amex or Citi will not see the credit pull from Barclays or vice versa. Though, Barclays will see all of your recently opened cards if they are over 30 days old. Another great thing is that if you are maxed applying for cards from Chase or Amex here’s another great offer you can take advantage of. Click here to get your real Transunion score for free .

Still Time To Book Cheaper United Award Tickets – Devaluation Pushed Off To February 3rd.

Back in November, United Airlines announced that they will be devaluing their award chart and raising award redemption’s effective February 1st, 2014.

This date has now been pushed off by 2 days, to February 3rd. That means that through February 2nd, you can still book award travel good through the end of January of next year, using the old chart and thereby locking in the cheaper rates.

Capture

United is part of the Star Alliance which consists of 27 different airlines. Up until the devaluation, you can book award travel using United miles to fly on any of the 27 airlines at the same rate, no matter if you are flying on United airlines itself, or if you are flying on any of the other 27 partner airlines. With the new award chart, this will not be true for the most part.

Award travel to Europe in coach class will be staying at the same reward level (which is currently 60,000 miles for a round trip) but business class on United Airlines goes up by 15,000 miles to 115,000 miles round trip and first class on United goes up by 25,000 to 160,000 for a round trip. – If that isn’t bad enough, when booking this same award on one of the partner airlines, a business class redemption goes up by 40,000 miles for a total of 140,000 for a round trip and first class is going up by 85,000 miles for a total of 220,000 miles!

Award redemption’s to Israel goes up by 5,000 miles in coach class for a total of 85,000 miles for a round trip. Business class when redeeming on United goes up by 20,000 miles to a total of 140,000 for a round trip, and first class on United with a stop in Europe goes up by 30,000 to 180,000.  For award redemption on a partner airline, Business class goes up by 40,000 miles for a total of 160,000 round trip and first class (including the coveted Lufthansa) goes up by a whopping 130,000 miles to 280,000 for a round trip. That first class ticket if booked now, is just 150,000 miles!

Award travel within the US (excluding Alaska/Hawaii) Mexico, Caribbean and Central America will not require any more miles under the new chart. Travel to Hawaii, is going up by 5,000 points in coach and travel to Alaska, is going by 10,000 points in both coach and business.

Current/old award chart valid through thorugh February 2nd.

Here is the new award chart – Effective February 3rd.

The bottom line is that this devaluation is very disappointing, but if you know your travel plans you can still hurry and book your award tickets now and lock in the lower rates.

50,000 Bonus Points On Alaska Air Credit Card + What They Are Good For

Update: This offer is expired.

There is currently an awesome offer for 50,000 bonus points on the Bank of America Alaska Airlines credit card. This offer is “officially” targeted, though I have personally applied for 2 of them at the same time, using 2 different browsers and have been approved for the Visa Signature version on both!

Capture

There are 3 versions for this card, Visa Signature, Platinum Plus or Preferred. YOU WILL ONLY receive the 50,000 bonus if you are approved for the Visa Signature version – Which requires a $5,000 minimum credit line. If you are approved for the Platinum version your bonus will be just 5,000 points or with the preferred version, just 3,000 bonus points. The problem is though, that it’s possible even though you applied for the Visa Signature version, that you will only be approved for a lower version card.

With the Visa Signature offer you get:

  • 25,000 miles on approval.
  • Additional 25,000 miles after spending just $1,000 within the first 90 days.
  • $99 annual companion ticket.

There is a $75 annual fee which is not waived, and there is a 3% foreign transaction fee with this card. If you cancel the card within 60 days, you’ll get the annual fee refunded.

When filing out the application, you can leave the Frequent Flyer number blank if you do not have an account.

If you are not approved for the card, you can try calling the reconsideration department  at 1-866-530-9829. If you are asked for a priority code, you can use VAB3E9.

You can check your application status here.

Though Alaska air is not part of any alliance, they do have multiple partner airlines where you can also redeem Alaskan points. When redeeming points on partner airlines there is a small fee of $12.50 for a one way award or $25 for round-trip. Partner airlines include Aeromexico, Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta Airlines, ERA Alaska, Emirates, Fiji, Korean, KLM, LAN, Pen Air, and Qantas. The only airline that they asses “fuel surcharges” for award travel is on British Airways.

Alaska Airlines allows for 1 way award travel. Plus, When flying solely on Alaska Airlines metal, you are allowed a free stopover on a one-way domestic award, including awards to Hawaii.

When booking Partner airlines for international travel, you can also book one way award travel (excluding Delta and Korean) and are also allowed one free stopover. Though, when booking Delta or Korean you will be charged as a round-trip fare. Just note, that when you book an award ticket on a partner airline, you can only have one partner airline in addition to Alaska Airlines for each one-way segment.

A one way domestic award flight on Alaska Airlines is just 12,500 miles, plus you get a free stopover. When redeeming on American Airlines or Delta, It will be the same amount of miles but you will not get the free stopover.

Changing or cancelling an award ticket 60 days before travel is free. A change or cancellation within 60 days will set you back $125.

Get a 100% Bonus for Sharing US Airways Miles – Get Miles For As Low As 1.1 cents!

Update 2: This awesome offer is scheduled to end today.

Update: This offer is around again through December 6th. Though this time, the offer is tiered, meaning you’ll only get the full 100% bonus if you share over 30,000 miles. Also, bear in mind that US Airways will be merging with American Airlines, so if you will not be burning the miles soon, they will turn into AAdvantage miles.  Also, this is likely from the last opportunities to get in on such cheap Star Alliance (and eventually American Airlines miles) before the merger, so if you’ve hesitated in the past, this is your opportunity.

US Airways Share Miles LINKindex

Here’s an awesome promotion from US Airways. Through October 15th, on the first 50,000 US Airways miles you share with a friend/spouse, US Airways will double the transfer up-to a maximum of 50,000 bonus miles!

Sharing the maximum amount (to receive the bonus) of 50,000 miles (i.e. paying to transfer them to someone else’s account) costs ~$568, including the $30 processing fee and 7.5% excise tax.

But the person to whom you transfer the miles would earn an extra 50,000 miles!

So you’ve essentially only paid 1.14 cents per mile ($568 / 50,000 US Air bonus miles) for the 50,000 bonus miles – which is quite a fantastic deal!!

Of course after your friend/spouse received the transfer, they can then share 50,000 miles right back to you or to another account, again for a total of 100,000 miles for the same cost.

United Mileage Plus Frequent Flyer Program Devaluing Miles (More Like Gutting)

United Mileage Plus Frequent Flyer Program Devaluing Miles.

United Airlines has announced that starting February 1, 2014, they will be raising the award rates for most award bookings.Capture

In addition to raising the award rates on many routes, under the new chart there will also be no more saver awards when booking on any of their 27 Star Alliance partners in business or first for international travel. On the current/old chart, there is no difference in amount of miles needed for an award ticket, no matter what carrier you flew. For example, right now you can book on any of their partner airlines (including the awesome Lufthansa first Class) a First Class ticket from the USA to Israel for 150,000 miles round trip. Under the new chart that same exact ticket will be a whopping 280,000 miles!

The new rates won’t go into effect until February 1, 2014, so you can book under the current rates through January 31, 2014 for travel up-to 1 year later.

There will be no change on most domestic award travel, which is currently 25,000 miles round-trip in coach (or 20,000 for short-haul) 50,000 round-trip in Business and 70,000 round-trip in First. US-Hawaii is going up by 5,000 miles round-trip and US-Alaska is going up by 10,000 points round-trip.

There will also be no change for travel to Mexico, Canada, The Caribbean, Central America and Northern South America. Southern South America is going up by 10,000 miles in Business and 5,000 miles in First. Southern South America countries include, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Reward redemption’s to Europe is going up by 15,000 miles per round-trip in Business class when redeeming on United. When redeeming on any partner airline it jumps to 40,000 additional miles for a round-trip. For First class on united you’ll now need an additional 25,000 miles on United, and for partners an additional 85,000 miles. There is no change for coach class.

Redemption’s to the Middle East/Israel is going up by 5,000 miles per round-trip in coach. In Business when flying United it’s going up by 20,000 miles per round-trip, and redeeming on a partner airline, it’s going up by 40,000 miles. In First class when flying United, it’s going up by 30,000 for a round-trip and for a partner airline it’s going up by a whopping 130,000 per round-trip.

From the Middle East/Israel to Europe on a partner airline, the rates are going up by 15,000 miles per round trip in coach and 35,000 miles in business. Officially it’s only going up 5,000 miles for both coach and business when flying on United, but the “slight” problem is that united doesn’t even fly those routes.

Here is United’s current award chart.

Here is the new award chart.

At this point the US Airways award chart offers way more value. It may be time to racking up some US Airways miles with the easily churnable US Airways Premier World Mastercard. Alternatively, it may be wise to get a high paying cash-back card like the Barclaycard Arrival. This card is the best cash-back credit card around, it offers 2.22% back on Everything, no foreign exchange fees and comes with a 40,000 point sign-up bonus.

Choice Hotel brands include, Clarion, Comfort Inn, Roadway Inn, Mainstay Suites, Quality Inn, Sleep Inn, Ascend Collection, Econo Lodge and Cambria Suites.

As with any redemption, you’ll want to do the math for yourself to figure out if the specific redemption you’re interested makes sense in terms of value.

Don’t have any IHG reward points? You can transfer them from the awesome Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card at a 1:1 ratio. Also, you can buy points direct from IHG. Additionally, for a limited time only you can get up-to a 50% bonus on purchased IHG points. Purchasing direct (via the current promo) 5,000 reward points will cost you $54, as you’ll get a 20% bonus.

Once you have 5,000 IHG points in your account. A “method” to get additional IHG points on the cheap, is to book any cancellable 15,000 point hotel stay at any location using “cash and points” for $70+5,000 points and then simply cancelling the reward stay. The $70 that you pay is nonrefundable so when you cancel the hotel you will get back 15,000 points instead, in your account. Just make sure that when booking the room it says that there will be no charge for cancelling. With this option the points will come out to just 0.7 cents per point or just $35 for 5,000 points.

Another option, is to purchase points through the limited time up-to 50% promo. Though, depending on how many points you purchase (if you are purchasing just a few thousand) it may be more worth though to buy the points via the “method”. If you are purchasing 40,000+ points you’ll end up with 50% more and it may be more worth it (dependent on the amount) to purchase the points direct.

British Airways:

British Airways, like American Airlines, is a member of the oneworld airline alliance.

The oneworld alliance is a group of 12 airlines including: Air Berlin, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN Airlines (including LAN Argentina, LAN Ecuador, LAN Express, LAN Peru), Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Royal Jordanian and S7.

British Airways also has non-oneworld alliance partners such as Alaska Airlines, Aer Lingus and Open Skies. Alaska and Aer Lingus can only be booked by calling BA at 800-452-1201.

This means that you can use your British Airways miles not only for travel on British Airways, but also on any of their oneword and non-oneworld partners.

Avios:

British Airways “Avios” points are both from the best and from the worst points out there (Huh?! How is that possible?! Read on…). Where they are simply awesome, is when redeeming for “short-distance flights”. Unlike other frequent flyer programs which will charge you a minimum of 25,000 points -…. for a round trip domestic mileage ticket regardless of the distance flown, BA Avios redemption’s are distance based.  For instance a flight from NYC to Detroit or from NYC to Toronto is 25,000 miles round trip – if you get saver award availability, otherwise its 50,000 – on United Airlines, but using Avios for these flights on American Airlines, is just 9,000 points round trip!

The Mileage Chart:

You can calculate the distance of your flight with the British Airways Avios Calculator or you can use the Great Circle Mapper.

Note: If the flight in question has a stopover, you will have to price each segment flown separately. Since British Airways doesn’t fly domestic, you will need to redeem your points on American Airlines for domestic redemption’s. Now, for instance, If AA has a direct flight to your destination and its under 650 miles, then the total cost will be just 4,500 points. What if though, AA doesn’t have a direct flight to your destination, and you need to take 2 AA flights to reach your destination? You will need to price each leg separately, and even though the total distance flown will be less than 650 miles you will end up paying 4,500 points x2 since there are 2 segments. This is different than he average US frequent flyer program which charges a flat redemption rate for tickets regardless of the stopovers,

The prices below are for coach travel. You will pay double for business class and triple for first class. Note: British Airways considers most domestic US flights being that they only have 2 cabins to only have economy and first class and will thus cost triple the coach rate to fly in business class. If the flight in question has 3 cabins with a “real first class”, the Avios needed will calculate accordingly. Also, this “issue” is only for flights in the US not for international flights, so a flight for instance, NYC – Toronto in business will price accordingly.

  • Flights that are 1-650 miles = 4,500 Avios.
  • Flights that are 651-1,151 miles = 7,500 Avios.
  • Flights that are 1,151-2,000 miles = 10,000 Avios.
  • Flights that are 2,001-3,000 miles = 12,500 Avios.
  • Flights that are 3,001-4,000 miles = 20,000 Avios.
  • Flights that are 4,001-5,500 miles = 25,000 Avios.
  • Flights that are 5,501-6,500 miles = 30,000 Avios.
  • Flights that are 6,501-7,000 miles = 35,000 Avios.
  • Flights that are 7,001 miles or more = 50,000 Avios.

Where Avios are generally a bad value (compared to other US frequent flyer programs) is redeeming them to use for most long-distance flights or for any redemption that charges their notorious high fuel surcharges (most flights to Europe).

For instance, an award ticket redeeming American Airline miles from NYC – London will charge just $2.50 in taxes. On the other hand, if you are redeeming Avios, the total in taxes and fess will be a whopping $412.70 for the exact same flight!

Also, since Avios uses a distance based chart, you can get some superb value on short destinations. The caveat is though, when redeeming on long-haul flights, they will charge a lot more miles then their peers, and this is bedsides for the high fees.

The exceptions to the rule – where Avios does not request theses high fees are;

  • Flights within North America redeeming points on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines
  • Redeeming points for flights on Air Berlin, Aer Lingus or LAN
  • Redeeming for flights on Qantas and are entirely within Australia
  • Flights that are within Europe
  • Additionally, Flights that are on Cathay Pacific have lower fees
  • Also, If you have an Iberia account with miles in it, you can transfer BA Avios into Iberia at a 1:1 ratio and save with less fuel surcharges for travel on Iberia.

Other benefits of Avios points:

  • There are no expedite or close-in fees for last minute award ticket bookings when booking with Avios.
  • You can book one-way tickets for half of the miles of a round-trip.
  • You can cancel tickets within 24 hours for free by calling British Airways at 800-452-1201. After 24 hours has passed you can redeposit miles for only the lessor of $40 or the taxes you paid. On a domestic ticket there is just $2.50 of taxes for each leg. That means you’ll pay just $2.50 to cancel a one-way domestic itinerary. Note: Date changes to a ticket cost $40, so if your ticket has less than $40 of taxes on it, its more worth it to cancel your ticket and rebook than to make a date change.
  • British Airways Avios expire after 36 months if there is no activity in your account. You can extend the life of your miles for another 36 months for just $2.50 by booking a short-distance domestic award for 4,500 Avios points plus $2.50 and then simply cancelling it after 24 hours. This constitutes account activity which extends the life of your Avios.
  • British Airways only charges 10% extra miles for a lap child flying internationally and 0 extra miles domestically when adding the infant at the airport (if flying internationally, add them at time of booking!). This is true even when redeeming Avios for flights on American Airlines. Normally, American Airlines as well as other domestic carriers charge 10% of the full regular priced fare, even though you are booking with points. That can sometimes add up to a pretty penny.
  • You can pool all your combined Avios points together within a household into one account.
  •  It’s easy to top-off your British Airways Avios account thanks to their partnerships with all of the transferable points programs. You can transfer Starpoints to BA at a 20K:25K ratio, American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards to British Airways Avios at a 1:1 ratio
  • With short-distance flights starting at just 4,500 Avios you can get a lot of free travel from your Avios.
