Hilton Award Category Changes For 54 Hotels – Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem Increasing In Category

Hilton Fall 2016 Full List of Category Changes

Hilton hotels will be shuffling the hotel award categories on a few of their hotels. 21 hotel properties will be going up in category, which means it will cost more points to redeem for a free night, and 33 hotels will be decreasing in category, which means fewer points for an award redemption.  index

These changes take effect for hotel award bookings made as of next week, October 12, 2016.

Hilton Hotel brands include Hilton Hotels, Conrad, Waldorf Astoria, Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Embassy Suites and others.

If your travel plans include one of the 21 hotels increasing in category, it may be worth it to book your award now, before award redemption’s increase. Bookings can be made for stays up to a year out, and typically can be cancelled up to a few days prior to arrival, without penalty. Once the award changes take effect, if you make any date changes to your award bookings, you will be charged at the higher category rate.

A notable hotel on the list of hotels increasing in category, is the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem, which is increasing from the current category 9, to their highest category level 10. Award bookings made before then, will be charged the current Category 9 redemption rate, which is 80,000 points per night.

These award category changes will not affect the 2 free nights you get with the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve Card.

Convert Your Starwood Starpoints into USAirways Miles & Earn 20% Bonus Miles

In addition to the American Airlines AAdvantage promo that we posted about earlier, there is also a similar promo for US Airways miles.

Terms are pretty much the same for this promo. For every 20,000 Starpoints you transfer, you’ll end up with 30,000 US Airways miles. Offer is good through July 30, 2014.

Capture

You can read about the USAirways award chart and benefits over here.

Unlike Starpoint transfers to AAdavantage miles, where the name must match for the transfer to go through, USAirways is (as of now) more lenient and will allow transfers even from accounts where the names do not match.

Also If you have a US Airways Premier World MasterCard, you’ll get a 5,000 mile discount on US Airways award tickets.

Convert your Starwood Starpoints into AAdvantage Miles & Earn 20% Bonus Miles

From now through July 31, 2014, when you convert 20,000 Starpoints to American Airlines AAdvantage miles you’ll earn a 20% bonus. Usually you would earn 25,000 AAdvantage miles on a 20,000 Starpoint transfer, now with this offer, you’ll earn 30,000 AAdvantage points.

Capture

One can transfer up to 79,999 of their Starpoints per transaction per program within a 24-hour period to the American Airlines AAdvantage program. Though, in order to maximize this promo, you won’t want to transfer more than 60,000 per 24 hour period, which with the current promo, will transfer to 90,0000 American Airline AAdvantage miles.

Note that the extra 20% bonus (5,000 points per 20,000) will not initially show when making the point transfer, as this bonus is provided by American Airlines.

Also note that Starwood hotel points do not transfer instantly to American Airlines and can take up to a week for the transfer to post.

You can also pick up an easy 40,000 USAirways miles, which come 2015 will convert into AAdvantage miles, with the US Airways Premier World MasterCard. With this offer, there is no crazy minimum spend that you need to do in order to get the 40k bonus. Spending just $1 will net you the 40,000 bonus. You can read more about this card here.

You can also earn 100,000 AAdvantage miles with the Citi Executive / AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard, though this requires $10,000 spend within in the first 3 months and has a $450 annual fee.

United Airlines Going Delta – Mileage Accrual Switching To Revenue Based

United Airlines is following Delta’s lead, in terms of instituting a revenue based system on mileage accrual. Up until now, you got miles based on the distance flown. As of March 2015 though, it will be based on the amount of money you paid for the ticket.

Capture

Starting March of 2015, regular base members will earn 5 miles per dollar paid. Silvers members will earn 7, Gold members will earn 8, Platinum members will earn 9, and 1K members will earn 11. There is a cap of 75k miles one can earn per ticket.
Miles will be earned on the base fare plus carrier-imposed surcharges. Miles will not be earned on the taxes portion of the ticket.

These changes will affect flights flown on United Airlines, United Express or partner tickets issued by United Airlines and which are credited to United’s frequent flyer program.

These changes will not effect tickets which are bought on Star Alliance or partner airlines (other than United) and the mileage is credited to United Airlines. Miles accrual on those tickets will continue to be distance-based.

Elite status will continue to be earned on distance flown and not price paid.

No matter how United would like to spin this, this is not a good change for most United members. The only ones who will gain from this change are business class travelers who are paying lots of $$ for tickets – Though in that case it’ll be more worthwhile to just redeem miles.

Once this change kicks in, American Airlines will be the last remaining domestic airline which still rewards miles based on distance flown.  Will American Airlines follow suit and go revenue based?

Via ReutersAmerican Airlines Group said it would first seek to combine the American and US Airways loyalty programs after its merger last year. “We are always watching the competitive environment and we’ll make sure AAdvantage is positioned as an industry-leading loyalty program,” spokesman Matt Miller said.”

One thing is for certain, in the unlikely event that AA chooses to keep their mileage program as is, they will undouebtly get many new frequent flyer members.

In terms of redemption changes – United announced that there will also be “new ways” to use your miles, including Economy Plus upgrades, Checked baggage subscriptions and “more on the way”. While these new redemption options will most likely not be at a decent redemption value (though we’ll have to wait and see as no details were given) one really has to wonder, being as the wording is extremely vague, if their ultimate goal is to go revenue based on the redemption side as well, as Delta already has – which will not be fun.

Bottom line: As of now, this is not the worst devaluation and the upcoming changes will for the most part only effect those who earn miles from flying, and not for those earning miles from credit cards. Though this is coming on the heels of United’s massive frequent flyer devaluation back in March, and one has to wonder what else United has up their sleeves…
