Chase Freedom credit card holders can now activate their Q2 2014 5% cash back categories. Even though they are called “5% categories”, in essence, you really actually get 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent. The 5 UR points can then either be cashed chase freedom out for 5% cash back, or if you or your spouse have the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Chase Ink Bold or Ink Plus credit cards you can combine the points into the Sapphire or Ink accounts (read more about how to combine points here) and then transfer those points at a 1:1 ratio into more valuable airline or hotel miles/points.

Quarter 2 (April 1-June 30, 2014) 5% cash back categories are Restaurants and Lowes.You can earn 5 points per dollar on up-to $1,500 which translates into 7,500 bonus points.

Additionally, If you have a Chase checking account you will also earn a 10% bonus on all points earned on all your spending during 2014. That means you’ll earn 5.5 points per dollar spent in these categories or 8,250 points!

 – – –  You can also maximize your 5% categories by buying gift cards to other merchants at Lowe’s. Lowe’s sells a slew of merchant gift cards such as to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Marriot, Kohl’s, Marshall’s and many more. These gift cards can then be used throughout the year, and you’ve maximized 5% cash back or 5 UR points on their purchase. You can also by gift cards at your favorite restaurants for future dining.
